At some point betwixt or between farm dramas, a little French hen laid a pearly gray-white egg. M brought it in and offered it for my breakfast and I scrambled it with half and half. You haven't savored an egg until you've had one that was still in the chicken when you went to sleep last night. Fluffy and golden. Wow!
At times like these I think again of M's urging us to keep chickens but quickly move away from that considering my own laziness. This is FL and I live in New England Right now it's 76 degrees here and quite lovely, the chickens are comfortable and all their needs are met. In CT it's cold and the snow is still 4' deep - nowhere for chickens to stroll and I'd have to go outside to bring them food and replace their ice with water. Incompatible with lazy.
But that was a breakfast to remember. My FL vacation ends tomorrow when I fly back to CT where I live in a cozy little house with a man [GB] who loves me and a cat who tolerates both of us. Every several months M&A treat me to this week here with them. M & I make the rounds of botanical gardens, museums, something-typically-Florida, quilting shops, lunch spots, book stores, yarn shops. There is nothing as special as a daughter and I'm lucky enough to have two of them AND three granddaughters. Life is good. Don't want my sons to feel slighted so I would quickly add that they - both of them - enrich my life in ways they can't possibly imagine. I always feel a bit of pity for those whose children are all of one gender. I have one sister only; never got what boys were about. My sons taught me a lot of that and I'm still learning. Truth is, I have four extraordinary children. (Fact One about me that's coming through here is that I don't believe in false modesty. If something wonderful is somehow connected to you, why pretend it isn't wonderful or connected? Seems dopey to me.) At some other time I may say I'm a really good knitter. Just stating a fact. I've been knitting for years, learned/unlearned lots, and I usually like what I end up with.
So on my final FL day, we are exchanging Scrabble moves, doing a bit of quilt block making, cooking a pot of broccoli soup, and going to the Farmers' Market. M plans my trips to include visits to a favorite Farmer's Market.
Here's a list of stuff-I-gotta-do when I get home:
- get serious about these 8 pounds
- make this great pasta dish -copied from a restaurant- for GB
- cut my hair
- pick up ILL books at library
- decide what soup to make for Cheap Therapy [biwkly knitting group]
- hem the slacks I got for Christmas
This time tomorrow I'll be home and that will be good, snow, sleet notwithstanding. Now I remember what June will feel like.
